Cataracts and Intraocular Lenses
Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed eye surgery in the world, and Stanford offers state-of-the-art cataract surgery by a process called phacoemulsification, or the destruction and removal of cataracts with sound waves. There are currently no medications or lasers that remove cataracts. Our primary surgeon, Dr. Peter Egbert, uses small incisions with foldable lens implants that allow for better and faster visual recovery after cataract surgery, with less post-operative astigmatism. In expert hands, the procedure takes only 30 minutes or less to perform, with local anesthesia, and is done on an out-patient basis, with the patient being able to go home soon after surgery.
