Ophthalmology

Basic Research

Basic Research in the Department of Ophthalmology includes studies of the laser-tissue interactions and electric field-tissue interactions, novel therapeutic laser applications, prosthetic vision, ophthalmic tissue engineering, artificial cornea, novel microsurgical technologies, advanced diagnostics and imaging, ocular microbiology, retinal and optic nerve pathologies, and stem cells.

Many of the basic research projects are conducted in collaboration with other departments at Stanford, including Hansen Experimental Physics Laboratory, Genetics, Neurobiology, Electrical Engineering, providing expertise in these fields and access to sophisticated equipment such as lasers, electronics, optical systems, DNA arrays, multielectrode arrays, nanofabrication facilities.
